EKTA joined hands with The Streisand Foundation as a benefactor of The Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. This initiative, underwritten by Barbra’s commitment in establishing the Center, changes the landscape for all future treatment of women’s heart disease. No longer will their recovery be placed at risk due to inaccurate diagnostic methods based on the study of male heart disease. More women today succumb to heart disease than all cancers combined and the goal is to measurably impact the statistics. The Center will focus on characterizing female-pattern heart disease and develop gender-specific diagnostic protocols that advance preventive, specialized care for women at risk.

EKTA visited Haiti with water.org on a field trip to the Central Plateau region to review progress – an eye-opening, mind-expanding experience in sustainable development.

Villages where our wells are installed are required to form their own Water Committee to set standards, manage and supervise their community’s use of the facility. Before we transfer ownership of the resource, each community demonstrates that they have the resources through monthly collections from users to pay for its upkeep and long-term maintenance.

Many of our community organizations had no previous experience with banking, limiting their active engagement with the country’s economy. Our partners arranged for one of Haiti’s most active microfinance institutions, Fonkoze, to open a branch at their base of operations. Each community now has an active bank account with reserves to meet evolving needs, including a renewed interest in improving sanitation practices in their village. Multiply everything you’ve read above by 40 wells and that gives you an image of what’s been accomplished through EKTA’s partnership with water.org and their local NGO, Haiti Outreach.

Amrita & Ashok were invited to participate in CGI America, an event in Chicago focused on the economic recovery in the US. With active participation from some of the most dynamic public and private sector leaders, CGI America focused on preserving existing employment and securing the future of American workers. It also showcased green technologies in construction, energy and vehicles.

Amrita & Ashok participated actively in the Manufacturing Working Group, an eclectic gathering of about 60 men and women from diverse backgrounds. Ashok moderated and reported on discussions at one of two Advanced Manufacturing tables. Our team earned recognition for its targeted recommendations. At the conclusion of CGI America, the extended Manufacturing Working adopted our vision statement:

Ten years from now, American Manufacturing must be driven by innovative technology merged with skilled worker participation to ensure cost-effective, globally competitive performance across all industries.

CGI America concluded with practical ideas and real action commitments from participants to move these vision statements along the path of timely implementation.
